Maximise your Weakness(es)

There was once a 10 year-old boy who decided to study judo despite having lost his left arm in a terrible auto accident. He registered with an old Japanese judo master and started his lessons.

throw2The boy was doing well in his training, and so he couldn’t understand why after three months, the master had taught him only one move.

“Master”, the boy said finally, “shouldn’t I be learning more moves?”

“This is the only move you know, but it is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the master replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in the teacher, the boy kept training. Several months later, the master took the boy to his first tournament, where he easily won his first two matches.

The third match was more difficult. However, after some time, his opponent became impatient and the boy was able to use his one move to win the match. He was quite amazed at the fact that he was now in the finals in spite of having mastered just one move.

The day for the final of the tournament came and this time his opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might be hurt, the referee called for a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the master intervened. No, “he said, let them continue.”

Soon after the match resumed, the opponent made a critical mistake; he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin his opponent down. He won the match and the tournament. He was the champion!

On the way home, the boy and the master reviewed every move in each match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind. “Master, how did I win the tournament with only one move?”

“You won for two reasons,” the master answered. “First, you’ve mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. And second, the only known defence for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”

The boy’s biggest weakness turned out to be his biggest strength after all.

We all have weaknesses. Those same weaknesses, put in the right perspective, and properly channelled, could become strengths.

Maximise your weakness(es).

Are You Living Your Life Backwards?

Are You Living Your Life Backwards?

“Often people attempt to live their lives backwards: they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want so they will be happier.

The way it actually works is the reverse.

You must first be who you really are, then, do what you need to do, in order to have what you want.”

 Margaret Young

Pause for a moment and think about this quote. Ask yourself “Who am I?”…… THEN Embrace the power of being yourself.

Passion is Not Enough – How to Stay Hungry and Accomplish Anything

It starts with passion. We find the thing inside of us that lights us up every single day, and we begin our journey to greatness riding on a wave on excitement and enthusiasm.

But this passion can only take us so far. Eventually, the excitement starts to wane and our motivation weakens.

Many of us quit, defeated, but the successful ones forge on, fueled by a seemingly endless supply of mental strength and determination. They have a hunger – an unwavering force that drives them to defy the odds and continue when everything and everyone could not. They want it more than they want air. It gives them the power to conquer the fears, the failures, the setbacks and survive the months, years or even decades of unappreciated work.

Hunger is a hard thing to hang onto in the face of doubt, but there are some ways to find and feed that hunger, and stay motivated when you’re struggling to see the light.

1. Change your environment. The physical space we spend our time in influences our energy, actions and moods so much more than we think. Take a look around and think about what changes you can make – at home and at work – so that your space moves you in a positive direction. This might include lots of visual reminders (let your goals be everywhere you look!), a clutter and distraction free workspace, plants, photos, healthy foods, and even surrounding yourself with smart and passionate people.

2. Create a routine. People who take consistent action are able to find a way to show up every day to ‘practice’ their craft, even when they don’t want to. They develop a process. If writing is your thing, commit to completing 1000 words every single day – no excuses. If you want to build a million dollar business, spend an hour each day working on your marketing and sales strategies. Take control of how you spend your time. Schedule your work and learn to follow your own rules with focus and discipline, so that the work becomes routine, and not a thing of willpower.

3. Anticipate roadblocks. Expect that things will not go according to plan. Expect that you will fail and make mistakes (and lots of them too). Expect to feel down, confused, unmotivated, afraid. Anticipate this and more, but more importantly, make a plan for what you are going to do after you fail.

4. Always keep learning. Learn everything there is to know about your field and stay curious. Our minds work better when we learn new things. People who are ongoing learners – through books, blogs, podcasts, and events – are more creative and more adaptable to change. They say that knowledge is power, but it also gives you the tools and frameworks to stay motivated, disciplined and execute on your potential. In the words of Dr. Seuss “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

5. Change your language. You can fill your days with “I’ll try” and “I should ”. I’ll try to write a blog post every day. I should exercise more. I’ll try to eat healthy. Each time you say that, you give yourself an out. Replace the “try’s” and “should’s” with “I will” and “I must” and make this a daily practice. They are scarier sounding words. They make you feel vulnerable. But they just might be the difference between procrastination and taking action.

6. Nourish your body. It’s simple: eat real food, move more and get better sleep. If you’re not doing these things, there will be a limit to how much you can accomplish. Even the small, positive changes in diet, exercise, and sleep can lead to significant changes in productivity, stress management and brain function. The people who perform at the highest levels are the ones who treat their bodies well.

Yes, massive success requires massive action. But as monumental as it seems, it is only the sum of the consistent efforts we put forth. It is a process, a journey. So let that journey (and all the little choices we make each day) be fueled by passion and hunger – because together, they are unstoppable.

15 Ways to Rediscover Your Inspiration

Inspiration comes and goes. We’re supremely motivated and inspired at times, and in those moments we accomplish great things way faster than we do when we’re not particularly inspired to hustle, create, and impact the world in a positive way.

It’s those few who are consistently inspired by a greater purpose beyond their own gain that shape the world we live in. So how do we join these few in forging not only our own successful endeavors, but seeing such profound success that the world benefits as well?

15 Ways To Get Re-Inspired

1. Be in nature

Be in nature at least once a month. It’s in nature that we find inspiration. It’s where we remove ourselves from the noise of our day to day lives, find clarity, and focus.
If you’re constantly “in it”, you’ll find your mind will clutter, and your inspiration will flee. Venture to the great out doors and let adventure inspire you.

2. Surround yourself with motivated people

You are the average of the 5 people you hang out with the most. If you hang out with millionaire’s, odds are you’re one as well. If you hang out with motivated people, you’re probably a motivated person as well.
Be very cognizant of who you hang out with. Choose your friends wisely. They’re influence on you is unavoidable.

3. Never think you’re “there”

I’ll always think that I have to improve on my writing – and that I have a long way to go to being a good writer. It keeps me inspired to learn and grow. If I thought I was a good writer I’d not only be lying to myself, but I’d be allowing laziness to peer its head into my life.
Laziness is the devil. Don’t think you’re great, be great.

4. Don’t attempt insignificant feats

Do you get excited by small goals that you know you can accomplish with ease? Of course not. It’s the big, audacious, bold goals and dreams that excite you, so don’t waste your time with the small stuff. Think bigger and be bigger.

5. Be healthy

Be healthy and active. If you’re healthy you’ll have more energy, and if you have more energy you’ll find that you’re far more motivated and inspired than you are if you’re tired and sluggish.
Take pride in your health and your work. Being healthy is a tool that you can use to your advantage, or something that can work against you. What’s great is it’s completely up to you.

6. Read often

Great men have always been voracious readers. Napoleon was, as is Gates, and so was Jobs. If you want to be inspired, pick up a book, it never fails. If a paperback book slows you down then you can always listen to self development audio books.

7. Have tunnel vision

Don’t have a back-up plan, a floor, or a ceiling. Failure shouldn’t be an option, nor should you put a limit on your success.
Focus on one goal, and let that one goal be the only thing that matters.

8. Get excited by adversity

It’s in struggle that we grow. Get excited about this. Too many allow adversity crush their enthusiasm and motivation, but it shouldn’t. It’s a challenge, and challenges are exciting.
Rise to them. Don’t get pushed back by anything.

9. Love problem solving

The road to success is, essentially, one big problem you have to solve. Let that problem excite you. Don’t look at your long, arduous road to success as a negative, instead look at it as a positive journey.
Your mindset will dictate how inspired you are and whether or not you remain consistently inspired and focused.

10. Remove negative people from your life entirely

Negative people are the cancer of society, but they don’t need to be a negative influence on your life. Just get rid of them, and get rid of them now!
If you’re only surrounded by inspired people, you to will be inspired, motivated, and happy.

11. Write 3 things you’re thankful for everyday

We far too often focus only on what we don’t have, rather than everything we do have. The problem with that approach is that happiness will forever elude our grasp.
If our happiness and motivation is contingent on a future accomplishment, when we accomplish what we’ve set out to do, we’ll then make our happiness contingent on an even greater accomplishment. Thus, happiness will always be out of our grasp.
Be happy and thankful first, then let that enthusiasm and energy inspire you to accomplish greatness.

12. Practice success

Practice success by identifying the little goals that you accomplish in your life. Write down your accomplishments, even if they’re small like going for a run or writing an article for a publication.
Practice success everyday and you’ll live life as a successful person.

13. Be a fighter

I love a man who grins when he fights. Winston Churchill
I love that quote. It reminds me of the song Fighter, by Bruce Springsteen. Enjoy adversity. Welcome it. Adversity is what will make you stronger. It’s only through great adversity that great men and women reach accomplish what they’ve set out to accomplish.
If success was easy, everyone would be there. Get inspired by your struggles just like a fighter gets motivated to step into the ring and see what he’s made of.

14. Eat healthy

Eating unhealthy leads to depression and obesity. It’s nearly impossible to be inspired when your body is uninspiring or you’re depressed.
As a simple rule for eating healthy, eat only things that you can pick or kill. Your diet should be made up of things that come from the earth. Stay away from anything man-made or packaged.

15. Study greatness

There are patterns to success. The more you study great people, the more you’ll see these patterns and incorporate them in your own life. Don’t, however, merely read about great people, study their lives. If you can, read about what others close to them have said, read articles about how they accomplished greatness.
Greatness inspires. The more you see that success can, indeed, happen, the more you’ll be inspired to accomplish your own audacious goals.
You can even read inspirational quotes, that will be sure to motivate you and shift you into the right frame of mind to be openly inspired.

Pilot With No Arms - The Inspirational Story of Jessica Cox

Jessica Cox: became the first pilot with no arms, proving you don't need 'wings' to fly
Jessica Cox: became the first pilot with no arms, proving you don't need 'wings' to fly

Jessica Cox suffered a rare birth defect and was born without any arms. None of the prenatal tests her mother took showed there was anything wrong with her. And yet she was born with this rare congenital disease, but also with a great spirit. The psychology graduate can write, type, drive a car, brush her hair and talk on her phone simply using her feet. Ms Cox, from Tuscon, Arizona, USA, is also a former dancer and double black belt in Tai Kwon-Do. She has a no-restrictions driving license, she flies planes and she can type 25 words a minute.

The plane she is flying is called an Ercoupe and it is one of the few airplanes to be made and certified without pedals. Without rudder pedals Jessica is free to use her feet as hands. She took three years instead of the usual six months to complete her lightweight aircraft licence, had three flying instructors and practiced 89 hours of flying, becoming the first pilot with no arms.

6 Ways to Motivate Others

If you’re leading a group of people towards success, you must learn how to motivate others. If you concentrate on understanding what motivates others and you meet the needs of these people, you’ll be on the right track for a positive and enlightening experience for all involved.

Once a person’s base needs are met, they usually move on to working on certain needs of self fulfillment. For example, if someone is hungry, they won’t be able to concentrate on a critical thinking task. In this case you’ll need to make sure that this person has had lunch before the task needs to be completed. But how can you motivate them to complete certain tasks once base needs have been fulfilled?

Try one or more of the following ways of motivating people:

1. Treat People Kindly. As a leader you need to treat the people helping you with the utmost respect and kindness. Hand out praise when it’s warranted. You might not know it, but it’s a big motivation booster when people are treated right. People enjoy knowing when they’re doing a good job and enjoy working with people that treat others with kindness.

2. Give People Responsibility. If there are certain tasks that you’re allowed to delegate to others, by all means choose someone to take responsibility for that task. When people are fully responsible, they’ll be more likely to find the motivation to complete the task. This is because, as a part of a group, they may not feel like their hard work matters, but when they’re responsible it certainly matters. They also know that they’re being held accountable for the success or failure of the project.

3. Be a Good Listener. No one likes to feel like they don’t matter. Just because you have final say doesn’t mean that you can’t get some help with important decision making. People enjoy feeling like they’re making a difference. Always keep an open ear and you’ll be motivating your team to come up with solutions and creative ideas.

4. Set Stretched Goals. Think long and hard about how your goal setting abilities can teach you how to motivate others. You don’t want to set goals that are too easy. Your team might reach them quickly but they won’t be pushed to become the best they can be. On the other end, you don’t want to set goals that are unattainable either. Your team will quickly lose motivation because they’ll never get the feeling of having met their goals. You want to find a goal that would push them to achieve just a little more than they have in the past and keep going from there.

5. Get to Know People. You may not want to be personal friends with your colleagues, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get to know them as people. Keep lines of communication open and get to know your team by paying attention to their wants, needs, strengths and weaknesses. People are smart and they’ll know when they have a leader that cares and a leader that doesn’t. They’ll certainly be more motivated to work hard for somebody that cares about them.

6. Keep Everyone in the Know. Nobody likes to be left in the dark. Make sure that you’re open about your thinking and decisions with the people you’re motivating. Sure, sometimes there will be things that you’re not supposed to share. You just need to make an effort to spread the word around when you can communicate important issues.

Remember that when you’re working on motivating others, it’s definitely important to strengthen their sense of belonging. You’re leading a little family and when everyone’s happy, they’re motivated to achieve big things.

Meet Inspirational 13 year old entrepreneur - Maya Penn

Maya-Penn-feature

Maya Penn is a tiny, vibrant force of nature. She’s an entrepreneur, philanthropist, fashion designer, animator, blogger, writer and illustrator. She runs a budding eco-friendly fashion business and a nonprofit for environmental awareness, and her mind churns constantly with new creative projects. And we should probably mention — Maya is only 13.

Maya’s story began with a humble piece of fabric she found lying around the house. She transformed that little scrap into a zebra-print headband embellished with a butterfly. She called it “Zebra Fly.” That experiment led to more handcrafted accessories, and soon, she was getting stopped on the street by admirers who wanted to know where she bought them. That was when she knew she had stumbled onto something big.

Those passing comments from strangers planted a bold idea in Maya’s head, and at the ripe old age of eight, she decided to launch a fashion company. Five years later, Maya’s Ideas is flourishing, and she has stayed true to her mission: All the items she makes are environmentally friendly. Plus, 10-20% of her profits go to charities and environmental organizations close to her heart, such as the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
